سورةُ البَقَرة

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحیمِ
 

In the Name of Allah The Merciful Beneficent


الم (1)

Alif. Lam. Mim.­ 1?

ذلِکَ الْکِتابُ لا رَیْبَ فیهِ هُدىً لِلْمُتَّقینَ (2)

This[ Holy ]Book which there is no Doubt in it[ regarding its being Truth ]is A guidance for the pious:


الَّذینَ یُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَیْبِ وَ یُقیمُونَ الصَّلاةَ وَ مِمَّا رَزَقْناهُمْ یُنْفِقُونَ (3)

[ The pious are: ]Those who believe in The Unseen; are steadfast in performing Prayers[ five times daily ]; and spend out[ To the needy ]of what We have provided For them;

1. Abbreviated letters) Almoqataat (symbol the

Divine Letters, the meaning of which are known only to Allah. There are 29 Surahs which have

abbreviated letters prefixed to them. They are

regarded as part of each Surah; however, the imaginary interpretations of these letters is regarded forbidden.

وَ الَّذینَ یُؤْمِنُونَ بِما أُنْزِلَ إِلَیْکَ وَ ما أُنْزِلَ مِنْ قَبْلِکَ وَ بِالْآخِرَةِ هُمْ یُوقِنُونَ (4)

[ The pious are: ]Those who believe in The Revelations sent to you[ O, Messenger ]and sent before you to Other Messengers; and[ in their hearts ]They have attained the certainty of Faith About the Hereafter;


أُولئِکَ عَلى‏ هُدىً مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ وَ أُولئِکَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ (5)

[ The pious ]are on the Guidance from Their Creator and Nurturer, and they are The ones who shall attain salvation.


إِنَّ الَّذینَ کَفَرُوا سَواءٌ عَلَیْهِمْ أَ أَنْذَرْتَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تُنْذِرْهُمْ لا یُؤْمِنُونَ (6)

[ O, Messenger! ]As to those who reject Faith, it is the same to them, whether You warn them, or do not warn them; They will not believe;


خَتَمَ اللَّهُ عَلى‏ قُلُوبِهِمْ وَ عَلى‏ سَمْعِهِمْ وَ عَلى‏ أَبْصارِهِمْ غِشاوَةٌ وَ لَهُمْ عَذابٌ عَظیمٌ (7)

Allah[ due to their ignorance and Disbelief ]has set a seal on their hearts And on their hearings; and on their eyes Is a veil;[ so they cannot perceive, hear Or see the Truth ]; and for them is a Great Chastisement awaiting.


وَ مِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ یَقُولُ آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَ بِالْیَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَ ما هُمْ بِمُؤْمِنینَ (8)

And of the people there are some who Say:[ By their tongues not their hearts ]" We believe in Allah and the Hereafter." While in fact they are not believers;

یُخادِعُونَ اللَّهَ وَ الَّذینَ آمَنُوا وَ ما یَخْدَعُونَ إِلاَّ أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَ ما یَشْعُرُونَ (9)

[ By saying so ]They intend to deceive Allah and the believers,­ 1? whereas they Deceive not but themselves, and they Realize it not;


فی‏ قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ فَزادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضاً وَ لَهُمْ عَذابٌ أَلیمٌ بِما کانُوا یَکْذِبُونَ (10)

In their hearts is a disease[ of doubt And hypocrisy ]and Allah has increased Their disease[ by depriving them of His guidance; ]for them is a painful Chastisement, because of their lies;


وَ إِذا قیلَ لَهُمْ لا تُفْسِدُوا فِی الْأَرْضِ قالُوا إِنَّما نَحْنُ مُصْلِحُونَ (11)

And when it is said to them:" Stop Making mischief on the earth." They say:" Verily, we are after peace and Improving the relation between The people";


أَلا إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْمُفْسِدُونَ وَ لکِنْ لا یَشْعُرُونَ (12)

[ O, believers! ]Know that they are Indeed, mischief-makers, but they do not Realize it;


وَ إِذا قیلَ لَهُمْ آمِنُوا کَما آمَنَ النَّاسُ قالُوا أَ نُؤْمِنُ کَما آمَنَ السُّفَهاءُ أَلا إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ السُّفَهاءُ وَ لکِنْ لا یَعْلَمُونَ (13)

When it is said to them:" Believe[ in Allah and the Hereafter ]as the other People believe." They say:" Shall we Believe as the simpletons believe?" Know that they are indeed themselves The fools, but they do not know;

وَ إِذا لَقُوا الَّذینَ آمَنُوا قالُوا آمَنَّا وَ إِذا خَلَوْا إِلى‏ شَیاطینِهِمْ قالُوا إِنَّا مَعَکُمْ إِنَّما نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِؤُنَ (14)

When they meet with those who believe, They say:" We believe." But when they Are alone with their evil leaders[ of Polytheists ]they say:" We are with you We[ are ]only mocking[ the Muslims. ]"


اللَّهُ یَسْتَهْزِئُ بِهِمْ وَ یَمُدُّهُمْ فی‏ طُغْیانِهِمْ یَعْمَهُونَ (15)

[ But ]This is Allah Who throws back Their mockery on them, and allows them To continue their rebellion in their Blindly bewilderment;


أُولئِکَ الَّذینَ اشْتَرَوُا الضَّلالَةَ بِالْهُدى‏ فَما رَبِحَتْ تِجارَتُهُمْ وَ ما کانُوا مُهْتَدینَ (16)

They,[ the hypocrites ]are the ones who Have purchased error at the price of Guidance, so their traffic, does not profit Them, neither they will be guided aright;


مَثَلُهُمْ کَمَثَلِ الَّذِی اسْتَوْقَدَ ناراً فَلَمَّا أَضاءَتْ ما حَوْلَهُ ذَهَبَ اللَّهُ بِنُورِهِمْ وَ تَرَکَهُمْ فی‏ ظُلُماتٍ لا یُبْصِرُونَ (17)

Their similitude is that of those who Kindled a fire and once it lit up all Around them, Allah took away their Light and left them in the utter Darkness, so they could not see;


صُمٌّ بُکْمٌ عُمْیٌ فَهُمْ لا یَرْجِعُونَ (18)

[ They are: ]Deaf, dumb and blind, so They will not return[ to the Path from their Darkness ];

أَوْ کَصَیِّبٍ مِنَ السَّماءِ فیهِ ظُلُماتٌ وَ رَعْدٌ وَ بَرْقٌ یَجْعَلُونَ أَصابِعَهُمْ فی‏ آذانِهِمْ مِنَ الصَّواعِقِ حَذَرَ الْمَوْتِ وَ اللَّهُ مُحیطٌ بِالْکافِرینَ (19)

Or[ another similitude about them ]is That of wayfarers caught in a rainstorm Which is accompanied by darkness, Thunder and lightning; while they are in The terror of death, they press their Fingers in their ears to keep out The stunning thunderbolt, but Allah Encompasses the disbelievers from all Directions:


یَکادُ الْبَرْقُ یَخْطَفُ أَبْصارَهُمْ کُلَّما أَضاءَ لَهُمْ مَشَوْا فیهِ وَ إِذا أَظْلَمَ عَلَیْهِمْ قامُوا وَ لَوْ شاءَ اللَّهُ لَذَهَبَ بِسَمْعِهِمْ وَ أَبْصارِهِمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلى‏ کُلِّ شَیْ‏ءٍ قَدیرٌ (20)

The lightning almost snatches away their Sight; every time it gleams, they walk Therein, and when the darkness grows On them, they stand still; and had Allah willed, He would have taken Away[ by thunder and lightning ]their Faculties of hearing and seeing; verily, Allah is Powerful over all things.


یا أَیُّهَا النَّاسُ اعْبُدُوا رَبَّکُمُ الَّذی خَلَقَکُمْ وَ الَّذینَ مِنْ قَبْلِکُمْ لَعَلَّکُمْ تَتَّقُونَ (21)

O, you people! Worship your Creator and Nurturer Who created you and Created those who came before you, So that[ through worshipping ], you may Become pious;

الَّذی جَعَلَ لَکُمُ الْأَرْضَ فِراشاً وَ السَّماءَ بِناءً وَ أَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّماءِ ماءً فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَراتِ رِزْقاً لَکُمْ فَلا تَجْعَلُوا لِلَّهِ أَنْداداً وَ أَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ (22)

Your Creator and Nurturer is the One Who Spread the earth as a carpet for your Rest and has built the sky above you as A ceiling; and sent down the rain from The sky and thereby produces fruits for Your sustenance; then do not set equals To Allah the One[ and the Creator of all These blessings ]when you know[ about The uselessness of your stony idols; ]


وَ إِنْ کُنْتُمْ فی‏ رَیْبٍ مِمَّا نَزَّلْنا عَلى‏ عَبْدِنا فَأْتُوا بِسُورَةٍ مِنْ مِثْلِهِ وَ ادْعُوا شُهَداءَکُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ إِنْ کُنْتُمْ صادِقینَ (23)

And if you are in doubt[ regarding The Truth ]as to what We have revealed To Our obedient worshipper[ Mohammad the Messenger of Allah ], Then produce a Surah similar[ to that Of the Qur"an ]and call your witnesses Apart from Allah,[ Who is powerful And Able to create everything ], if you Are telling the truth;


فَإِنْ لَمْ تَفْعَلُوا وَ لَنْ تَفْعَلُوا فَاتَّقُوا النَّارَ الَّتی‏ وَقُودُهَا النَّاسُ وَ الْحِجارَةُ أُعِدَّتْ لِلْکافِرینَ (24)

But if you cannot do it and for sure you Cannot do it, then fear the Fire that its Fuel is men and stones­ 1?[ already ]Prepared for the disbelievers.

وَ بَشِّرِ الَّذینَ آمَنُوا وَ عَمِلُوا الصَّالِحاتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْری مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهارُ کُلَّما رُزِقُوا مِنْها مِنْ ثَمَرَةٍ رِزْقاً قالُوا هذَا الَّذی رُزِقْنا مِنْ قَبْلُ وَ أُتُوا بِهِ مُتَشابِهاً وَ لَهُمْ فیها أَزْواجٌ مُطَهَّرَةٌ وَ هُمْ فیها خالِدُونَ (25)

And[ O, Messenger! ]give glad-tidings To those who believe and do good Deeds, that for them[ by Allah"s Favour ]Await Gardens, through which streams Flow. Every time they are given fruits Therefrom for their sustenance they Say:" This is what we were fed with Before[ in the other world ]" and they Are given other things in perfect Similarity; and therein they shall have Pure mates; and therein they shall abide Forever.

Fatiha

­ 1?( The Opening Surah­ 2? of the Holy Book )Revealed at Makkah 7 Words of Revelation­ 3?( ayat )

 

سورةُ الفَاتِحَة

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحیمِ (1)

In the Name of Allah The Merciful Beneficent

1. This Surah is known as Ummul-Qur"an i. e., the

foundation of the Holy Qur"an, since it comprises the Divine Attributes which are the essential links between the Creator and the created ones:" The Creator and Nurturer"," the Merciful Beneficent" and" the Absolute Sovereign of the Judgement Day".

It also contains the most vital pray and invocation of the worshippers; and the prescribed prayers cannot be complete without reciting this Surah.

2. Surah is a Qur"anic section which contains at

least three `Ayats; the Holy Qur"an includes one hundred and fourteen Surahs; as the word" Surah" means" the wall of a fortress" or" a city of refuge", this metaphorical allusion finds convincing proof that Allah"s Words of Revelation( `Ayat )are enclosed within the strong walls of 114 Surahs. The longest Surah of the Holy Qur"an

( Al-Baqarah )contains 286 `Ayats and the shortest( Al-Kauthar )contains three `Ayats.

3. Word of Revelation, in this translation replaces

verse since by Quranic standard, verse is not a correct equivalent for `Ayat i. e., Divine Revelation.

Verse has been defined in various English dictionaries as follows:

Verse: 1 )one of the lines of a poem. 2 )a particular type of

metrical line. 3 )a poem, or piece of poetry. 4 )a short division

of a chapter in the Bible, usually consisting of one sentence or part of a long sentence. 5 )Music, that part of a

song following the introduction and preceding the chorus.

I believe the reason that a division of a chapter in the Bible has been called verse is because the Psalms of Dawud( David )are written in the song form and also there has not been any Divine Forbidding, whereas the Holy Qur"an rejects the idea of having any connection with poetry by stating:" We have not taught him,[ the Messenger ]poetry, nor it is suitable for him; this Book is but a Reminder and a Divine qur"an[ religious text ], in order to warn him who is alive[ in spiritual sense ]and also the charge may be proved against the disbelievers[ who are spiritually regarded dead ]"( 36: 69 - - 70 ). The very reason that the enemies of the

Holy Messenger, called him a poet and regarded the Holy Qur"an, a collection of poems, can be traced in the fascination which recitation of the Words of Allah had created among the community of Arabia and had stirred people enter into the realm of the religion. Surely the rhyming sound which was

used by the Holy Messenger mostly in the Makkan Surahs, had been wrongly taken for the Divine effect of the revolutionary meanings of Allah"s Words and therefore had some share in providing accusations which were spread by the ringleaders of the disbelief in order to hinder people from around the Holy Messenger who by Allah"s Command had brought the Truth.( 37: 37 )whereas

poetry, mostly deals with imaginary and obscure descriptions partly known to the poet himself as personal experience. So by Allah"s Permission, in

place of verse which is used almost in all English translations of the Holy Qur"an, I have chosen Word of Revelation for `Ayat and Words of Revelation for `ayat, respectively, when the Divine Message is implied. But `Ayat also means: Miracle, Divine Sign,

token, proof, decree and admonishing lesson.

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعالَمینَ (2)

The worshippers" thanksgiving and Adoration is due only to Allah: The Creator and Nurturer­ 4? of the worlds[ And their inhabitants ];

4. Creator and Nurturer, replaces Lord since it is not

the right equivalent for Ar-rabb, which in the Holy Qur"an has been defined by Allah as the Creator:

and those before you."( 2: 21 )And also Allah

introduces Ar-Rabb by stating:" O, Mussa, I am Allah, the Rabb of the worlds."( 28: 30 )furthermore by the

tongue of Ibrahim( Abraham )Ar-Rabb is defined as the Creator and then he adds other positions of Ar-Rabb which function in the life of mankind after the Divine Act of Creation respectively: The Guide, the Nourisher, the Guardian, the Cherisher and the Merciful Sovereign of the Day of Judgement.

( 26: 78 - - 82 )Nurturer is the only word that I have found equivalent for most of those positions excluding" the Creator"; the word" nurture" signifies:

fostering, training, educating and nourishing.

Therefore Creator and Nurturer can collectively convey Ibrahim"s description of the Divine functions of Ar-Rabb. But Ar-Rabb is not only the Creator of

mankind but also the Creator of the Mighty Throne,( 9: 129 ), the Creator of the Seven Heavens( 23: 86 ), the Creator of the heavens and the earth and what is between them( 19: 65 )and the Creator of the Dawn( 113: 1 )as well; thus Ar-Rabb is the most comprehensive substitute for Allah among at least 99 Allah"s Names of Outstanding Excellence which a worshipper is enjoined to invoke to Allah through these divinities.( 7: 180 )So, for brevity sake we can

say" the Creator" but never the Sustainer" or" the Cherisher" since each one is only one of the positions of the Creator. Also Ar-Rabb cannot be

recognized as a correct equivalent due to its dissimilarity with the word Lord which various dictionaries have agreed upon its meanings as follows:

Lord:

1 )a person who has dominion over others; a master, chief, or ruler. 2 )a person who exercises authority from property rights;

an owner or possessor of land, houses, etc. 3 )a person who

is a leader or has great influence in his chosen profession:

the Lords of the theatrical world; one of the great Lords of banking. 4 )a titled nobleman or peer; a person whose

ordinary appellation contains by courtesy the title Lord or some higher title. 5 )Lords, the Lords spiritual and Lords

Temporal comprising the House of Lords. 6 )Brit. a: the title of

certain high officials( used with some other title or the like ):

Lord Mayor of London. b: the title informally substituted for

marquis, earl, viscount, etc., as in the use of Lord kitchener

for Earl kitchener. 7 )the supreme Being; God; Jehovah. 8 )the

saviour, Jesus Christ.

The above mentioned diverse meanings can only through misunderstanding stand as an equivalent for Ar-Rabb. So in translation of the Holy Qur"an

which should necessarily be contextual-cultural, we can only rely on the Qur"an"s inner dictionary which lies within the context, created by Allah the Almighty, the Creator of all things including men and meanings.


الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحیمِ (3)

The Merciful Beneficent;

مالِکِ یَوْمِ الدِّینِ (4)

[ And ]The Absolute Sovereign of The Day of Judgement.


إِیَّاکَ نَعْبُدُ وَ إِیَّاکَ نَسْتَعینُ (5)

[ O, our Creator and Nurturer! ]You alone Do we worship, and Your Aid alone do We seek;


اهْدِنَا الصِّراطَ الْمُسْتَقیمَ (6)

Please do guide us to the Straight Path:


صِراطَ الَّذینَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَیْهِمْ غَیْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَیْهِمْ وَ لاَ الضَّالِّینَ (7)

The path of those upon whom you Bestowed the blessing­ 5?[ of salvation ], not[ The path ]of those[ who due to their Denial of the Truth ]were inflicted by Your Wrath­ 6?, nor those gone astray.­ 7?

5. The Divine believers, the righteous, the guided

ones and those who strive in Allah"s Path:( 2: 5 ),( 47: 17 ),( 29: 69 ).

6. Those who raised Allah"s Wrath and therefore

were inflicted by it:( 2: 61, 65, 90 )

7. Those who chose the disbelief over the Divine

Faith( 2: 108 )( The Cow )Revealed at Madinah 286 Words of Revelation( ayat )
